Future plans

On Tuesday 12th September, 2023, a resolution was passed in Parliament to offer through a lease agreement, a building on 836.5 square metres of land, at the Garrison, St. Michael, to the AAB for use as a Basic Life Skill and Resource Centre. The resolution was signed by President, Dame Sandra Mason the 20th, November 2023, and appeared in the Official Gazette November 27, 2023 Part A Vol. CLVIII No.121 with Res. 28. The lease has been prepared by The Ministry of Housing and Lands and we are hoping to have the lease signing and handing over completed shortly.

This building will be renovated into our Basic Life Skills and Resource Centre. The main purpose of the centre is to provide teens and young adults on the Autism spectrum with the necessary skills and confidence needed to live more independent lives and allow them opportunities to build social skills. Additionally, we also hope to partner with professionals to provide various therapies, counselling support, parent support programmes and recreational activities. We will be attempting something no one has offered before here in Barbados, to take persons on the spectrum and give practical demonstration classes in how to look after themselves, from rudimentary activities to advanced ones. This is a natural extension to what they may be learning at home.

We see this project as the next step to carrying forward the original goals of the founders, and hope to provide a better future for the present generation of young children, and to the ones not yet born.
