Past initiatives

During Easter vacations in 2006 and 2007 we organized professional and parent classes in autism, education and coping techniques, by inviting over to Barbados a group of teachers from a "Beacon of Excellence School & quot; from the UK, Linden Bridge, from south London.

We partnered with the Min of Education to hold professional training classes for local teachers;  skills transfer was achieved and techniques were taught, demonstrating up to date classroom methods; for the parents we offered one to one sessions from the Linden Bridge teachers in carrying on school teaching at home, to reinforce the school curriculum. We raised the entire cost of the two visits by fundraising and donations; we had excellent commitments from airlines (Virgin Atlantic) car hire companies (Courtesy) and bargain accommodation from Hotels (Coconut Court) many other business houses helped us, it was a great community response, and we also were given radio and air time live TV interviews by CBC.

Public education and awareness is an ongoing theme we’ll never see the end of, generations change and grow up so there are always new persons to contact and inform. That was one of our founding reasons, to educate and inform, and with the help of the media and broadcasts on radio especially, we now have a gifted, articulate set of parents who are confident about speaking out to the greater community that autism is not a mental illness, it is a developmental disorder which could happen to anyone.
