Autism

Frederick Johnson, President

I was born in Liverpool England but Barbados has been home since 1980. I married here and have two children. My son Zach is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. I’ve taught him to take care of himself when I’m out in the day and if I’m off island overnight.

My goal for him in the next years as it has been for a long time now, is to redouble efforts to find him a job and enable him to improve his social life. All of the disabled community and especially those on the spectrum have restricted social lives and there are few job opportunities, so we have to lobby and shout for change to let them become part of mainstream society. They want their independence and want to contribute, just like the rest of us. Help us to help them. Good luck to all of us in 2025.

Akeem Rudder, Vice President

I am the visionary founder of IncludeU Sports Academy, transforming inclusive sports in Barbados since December 2020 through specialized coaching and education for individuals with disabilities. My efforts have led to groundbreaking programs, such as the Autism Exercise Intervention program, significantly improving the lives of participants.

Through my dedication to Autism research, inclusion, and sharing my knowledge, my goal is to inspire a movement towards greater understanding and acceptance of Autism, changing lives and creating a more inclusive and empathetic society.

Cressida Alleyne, Secretary

My name is Cressida Alleyne and I am the parent of two sons. My older son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of three and is now twenty six years old.

I believe in the mission of the association which is to advocate for and work towards improving the lives of children and adults with Autism and to raise public awareness and acceptance. I intend to do everything I can to make Barbados a more inclusive and understanding society.

I am a primary school teacher by profession and have been for the past twenty five years.

Jamella Forde, Treasurer

With over 15 years of experience in the hospitality sector and more than a decade in property, project, and events management, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to every endeavor. Four years ago, autism became an integral part of my life when my “son” (my biological nephew) was diagnosed. This life changing experience has inspired me to promote autism awareness and support others facing similar challenges. Outside of my professional pursuits, I have a passion for traveling, cooking, and crafting, which bring joy and creativity to my life.

Colleen Roberts, Assistant Secretary Treasurer

As a dedicated mother to my 10-year-old autistic son, I am deeply passionate about spreading awareness about autism and advocating for legislative changes to support families of those on the spectrum. Known for my hands-on approach, I am often the one who rolls up my sleeves to get tasks completed for the association. I have been a pillar of strength and dedication, always ready to tackle any challenge. I am excited about the fresh faces on the executive team, hoping they will help share the load and bring new energy to our efforts.

My unwavering commitment to improving the lives of individuals with autism and their families is an inspiration to all. I look forward to continuing my work with the association, driving positive change and support for the autism community.

Nadia Simmons, Public Relations Officer

I am a wife and realtor by profession with a BSc in Hospitality and Tourism Management and a Masters in Global Marketing, but my proudest title is mom of my Autistic son.

During my short term on the executive, it has brought me true joy knowing I am working hard to improve the lives of persons diagnosed with Autism and their families. Through my son’s diagnosis, I have learned about the world of neurodivergence, and, by recognizing a few traits in myself, I was diagnosed with ADHD.

I am passionate about spreading autism awareness and making life better for persons on the spectrum and their families. As the newly elected Public Relations Officer, I am committed to using my skills and experiences to enhance our outreach, build stronger community ties, and advocate for the support and acceptance that every individual deserves.

Chantal Fields, Floor member

I am new to the autism community, and I am super excited to sit on the newly elected board as a floor member.

I currently have a BSc. degree in psychology with sociology. I am certified in social media and brand management, and I work as a marketing advisor for one of the leading apparel companies in the US.

During my time on the executive, I want to advocate for and build awareness for those who fall under this association. As well as making Barbados a better place for our autistic kids. So, as it was rightfully put at the members’ meeting, I am ready to roll up my sleeves and pants legs and put in the work.

Susan Mascoll, Floor member

I am a mother of two children. Over the years I’ve worked in Administrative positions both in the Private and Public sectors, with a background in insurance.

I am presently a stay at home mom to my son Isaiah. I am ambitious with a strong sense of professional integrity and as a member of the Kiwanis Club I pride myself on a high ethical plane.

I joined the Autism Association of Barbados to help spread awareness, so parents in the future would not face the many challenges I faced when I didn’t have a clue what Autism was. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to contribute and look forward to making things happen.

Dawn Munroe, Floor member

I am an Attorney-at-Law of seven years standing and a Social Worker for the past two years.

Having a passion for children, child welfare and child rights activism, my ultimate goal is to combine my two disciplines to become a child advocate not only in Barbados but within the region.

My aim is to significantly improve the lives of children by ensuring that the appropriate policies are in place to protect the rights of every child.

Recently, I began my journey of advocacy through the piloting of a successful Autism Awareness project through the University of West Indies, Cave Hill and I am currently working on more projects for the future.

Lisa “Handy woman” Harewood, Floor member

Everything but the kitchen sink is the running joke about my handbag. A jack of all trades, I did secretarial studies, a Bachelors in Education, 15 years in the banking sector and now I’m a self taught baker.

I have always had a love for children and young people and I believe that we should always find ways to give back to those around us.
