Common Signs of Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder can appear in a range of forms and levels of severity. Some individuals develop typical capabilities in terms of speech and language but struggle with lifelong social and behavioral differences. Others may have challenges in communication, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral issues, such as excessive tantrums and repetitive behaviours.(autism.org)

Many children with autism usually look like other children but they may act or interact in ways that seem different to that of their peers.

Social communication and social interaction challenges

  1. Delayed Speech and Language Skills: Children with autism may start talking later than their peers or may not talk at all. They might also have trouble holding conversations.
  2. Difficulty with Social Interactions: They may struggle to understand and respond to social cues and non-verbal means of communication such as eye contact, facial expressions, gestures and body language.
  3. Preference for Solitude: Many individuals with autism may prefer being alone and might not seek out interactions with others, including family members. Many also have difficulties participating in imaginative play and lack an interest in making friends.
  4. Challenges with Understanding Emotions: They might have difficulty understanding and expressing their own emotions and the emotions of others.
  5. Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity :Persons with Autism often have abnormal social approaches and struggle with normal back-and-forth conversation. They often have no interest in initiating or responding to social interaction. 


Repetitive Behaviors and Restricted Interests

  1. Repetitive Movements: These can include hand-flapping, rocking, or spinning.
  2. Intense Focus on Specific Interests: Individuals with autism often have very focused interests or hobbies that they may talk about or engage in extensively.
  3. Resistance to Change: They may find it difficult to adapt to changes in their routine or environment.
  4. Sensory Sensitivities: Sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or smells is common. They may be either overly sensitive or under-responsive to sensory stimuli.

Other Signs

  1. Unusual Eating or Sleeping Habits: This can include a very limited diet or difficulties with sleeping.
  2. Challenges with Motor Skills: Some may have delayed development in fine and gross motor skills.
  3. Self-Injurious Behaviors: In some cases, individuals may engage in behaviors like head-banging or biting themselves.
