On August 1, 2024, we finally received the keys to our building, which we plan to completely renovate to meet our facility needs. We will begin this project in August, aiming for completion by December 2024, with strong support from our members and volunteers. Consequently, we anticipate launching our Basic Life Skills classes in the first quarter of 2025.
Members of the AAB, this long-term project aims to create a fully functional demonstration facility where we can teach essential life skills to young people who have never had the opportunity to learn to care for themselves. Our program will equip them with basic skills such as cooking, washing, cleaning, and shopping, enabling them to live independently and take pride in their achievements, especially as they prepare for a future without their parents’ support.
We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the 2024 “Forces for Good” Bursary from the Massy Foundation of Trinidad in recognition of our accomplishments, including securing the leasehold agreement and our Basic Life Skills program.
Additionally, we are awaiting news from Barbados regarding the “Maria Holder Trust Fund” Award for our efforts in establishing the Basic Life Skills program.
In the latest Barbados Government Budget, it was announced that the noncontributory pension fund will be extended to individuals on the autism spectrum, school leavers, and adults who are unable to work or find employment due to their circumstances. This measure will help these individuals and their families escape the poverty trap and is a progressive and compassionate policy decision.
