About Us
The Autism Association of Barbados (AAB) was started in 2003 by the husband and wife team of Mrs Delphi Walcott and Mr. Lawrence Walcott. Mr. and Mrs. Walcott were grandparents to a young man with Autism and they, like many other parents at the time, found that there were very few places they could turn to for advice and support.
It began as a loose association of parents who gathered in their homes to give each other guidance and advice on the challenges that they had been facing. We seek to continue the work started by these early members by joining with other stakeholders to provide advice, support and guidance to parents, families and caregivers who have children, teenagers or adults on the autistic spectrum.
The AAB became a registered charity on 22nd February 2005, with registration number 612. We also became an active member of the Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) on this same date. Today, we have the largest membership of all of the 25 disabled persons support groups under the BCD umbrella. We currently have a membership of approximately one hundred and fifty (150) persons, comprising of persons with ASD, parents and caregivers and professionals who provide support services for these children and adults.
We currently have an active chat group which allows parents to call or message each other fostering a great sense of community and with the aid of other social media we have been able to carry our message to a wide cross section of Barbadians.
